Why I started my business

The last few weeks have been full and I’ve been reflecting on what made me start my business in the first place.

I never planned on having my own business, I didn’t even consider it. Honestly, the thought literally never entered my head.

But when I was five months pregnant and moved back to London I needed a job that would be flexible enough through the rest of my pregnancy and enable me to be present and have that same flexibility once my little boy was born. And so I started officially freelancing, totally unplanned.

For the next two years I worked with one retainer client and did a few projects that came my way. I literally didn’t do any marketing, I barely posted on Instagram. I was in a freelancer mindset - selling my services as a “business expense”, trading time for money, with no focus on the value or transformation I was providing, very little confidence in my abilities - despite the proof otherwise!

SOME OF MY FAVOURITE PROJECTS FROM WHEN I STARTED MAKING CHANGES IN MY BUSINESS

I wanted to have flexibility in my day, location freedom, financial freedom, most importantly I wanted to be present and make memories with my son as he grows. I realised that to reach these goals, something had to change because the path I was taking was an extremely long and slow path.

So, I continued learning. I continued to upskill. I continued to push myself and I threw myself in the deep end, more times than I can count. Most importantly, I started to change my mindset.

I knew that to accomplish this I first had to invest in myself; I started to do some inner mindset work which in turn started to change the mindset around my business.

I stopped seeing myself as an expense for my clients or a freelancer who trades hours for money, and instead began viewing myself and the work I provide as a valuable investment for my clients.

That’s when things really started to change in my business. I began to feel more confident showing up as a business owner and entrepreneur as opposed to someone who just does these projects on the side as a freelancer.

I'd love to know if you also started your business unintentionally or if you planned for months? Send me a DM on Instagram and let me know!
